Save the Date! Our 100^th birthday is just around the corner.

For the past one hundred years, Rose City Veterinary Hospital has upheld its mission to provide the highest quality medical care available to its patients. To this day, our staff remains committed to blending modern medicine with old fashioned love for each pet we see and we continue to strive for improvement in every service we offer. Our hospital is extremely proud to have served the Portland community for the past century, but we could not have made it this far without the wonderful pets that make our city wag and purr!

We are excited to share this historic milestone with the public by offering an open house and celebration at the hospital?s location on SE 8th and Powell Blvd, directly before the Ross Island Bridge on the east side. The birthday celebration will be held on Sunday, July 24th, from 12pm to 4pm, and all are invited to attend. We hope you?ll join us for this once in a lifetime party!

Bring the whole family along and enjoy an afternoon of fun and games, including free food and drinks for vegetarians and meat lovers alike, face painting, balloon animals, door prizes, hospital tours, and a pair of llamas for petting. For your furry family members, there will be a pet costume contest and professional photos with you and your pets. Pets may come dressed in any costume, but ?Turn of the Century? pets are especially encouraged to come dressed like the guys and dolls of the early 1900s when the hospital first opened.

Two organizations with whom Rose City Veterinary Hospital works will be in attendance. A representative from the Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team will be on site to educate the public about their mission and accept pet food and supply donations. The Oregon Humane Society will be bringing several dogs available for adoption to feature at the event as well as the adoptable cat that Rose City always holds a space for. This event is free and open to the public, and we look forward to celebrating with you on July 24th!

This modest and humble boy is Little Foot. The shelter environment is stressful for him, so he may be shy and timid at first. Once he is given ample time to warm up and adjust, he will make a wonderful and loving companion. He enjoys affection and attention and definitely needs his fair share! If you are patient, kind, loving, and have a quiet, easygoing home environment, Little Foot may just be the purrfect little dude for you. His history with other animals is unclear, but he seems unfazed by other kitties. Meet with him and see just how handsome he is!

Holiday Pet Hazards

While you are busy making your festive plans for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas, please don’t forget to include your pets. The holidays are a time for giving, but there are some things you should not share with your furry friends. Once you know the hazards, a little precaution and prevention will make holidays a happy time for everyone.
Some of the more common holiday hazards include:

Bones:

The holiday turkey or chicken will leave a lot of tantalizing bones, but don’t feed them to your pet. Beware of steak bones, too. Small bones or bone chips can lodge in the throat, stomach, and intestinal tract.

Holiday plants:

Holly and mistletoe are extremely poisonous when eaten. The lovely poinsettia may not be truly poisonous but its milky white sap and leaves can certainly cause severe gastric distress. With so many hybrid varieties available each year, the best approach is to keep the plants out of your pet’s reach.

Electrical cords:

Holiday lights mean more electrical cords for kittens and puppies to chew. Be sure you have cords secured and out of the way.

Candles:

Lighted candles should never be left unattended and that is even more important if left at kitty’s eye level or within puppy’s chewing zone. An exuberant tail or a swat of a paw can turn candles and hot wax into an instant disaster. Anchor candles securely and away from curious faces and feet.

Pine needles:

Check around holiday trees frequently. Ingested pine needles can puncture your pet’s intestines.

Holiday tree:

Make sure your tree is well secured. If you have a tree-climbing cat or large dog with a happy tail, anchor the top of the tree to the wall, using strong cord or rope. Preservatives often used in the water in a tree stand can cause gastric upsets, so be sure it is inaccessible or not used. Avoid sugar and aspirin additives in the water as well.

Ornaments:

Sharp or breakable ornaments, dreidels, and even aluminum foil should be kept out of reach. String objects, especially tinsel and ribbons, are to be safeguarded at all costs. They are thin and sharp and can wrap around intestines or ball up in the stomach.

Stress and company:

With everyone coming and going, watch out for open doors and sneaky pets. Make sure your pets have updated collars and tags on in case of escape. Microchipping your pet will also help if your pet escapes. All pets should have at least two forms of id on them at all times. Ask guests to keep an eye out for pets under foot and remind them that sometimes your normally friendly dog or cat may be less than willing to deal with enthusiastic children and rooms full of unfamiliar people. Provide a special quiet place with a blanket and fresh water for your pets to retreat to when the festivities get too stressful.

Pet Patient of the Month
When Yoda saw that the front door to his house was open, he couldn't help it---he just ran right out! Yoda is so small that the driver of the car didn't see him coming and he was hit. His skin was torn away from his leg. Yoda has healed over quite nicely and he pulled through the whole ordeal with such a positive attitude.

Pet Boarder of the Month
Buddy is just that, a buddy. He is a very loyal and loving Border Collie mix. Buddy will do just about anything to get his love and some treats on the side. We love it when Buddy sleeps over!

Nigel is a beautiful kitty who comes in frequently for his diabetes.

He is always very talkative until he gets the lovin' he always wants---and always

Smokey is a very lovable pup! Earlier this month he had to get some stitches and he just couldn't leave them alone. Poor Smokey went through three different cones around his head! The third time we tried a different approach: An inflatable ring. (Smokey still found a way to puncture it.) Today Smokey's incision is healing quite nicely and he looks great in his tied-up 80's T-Shirt and his inflatable ring. Smokey is a very brave guy. We like to think that he kept chewing up his cones so he could come back and see us!

Porky the lovable Bulldog! Porky is just a joy to be around, always happy to see us and full of life and personality. October is a big month for Porky---not only because he as been chosen as our pet of the month, but also because his birthday is on Halloween!

Not only has Dusty been undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer, but she recently got a little stomach bug as well. She's pulled through it all like a trooper, and is now eating well and feeling like her "normal" self. In fact, despite being an 8 year old lab mix, Dusty has hung in there with as much spunk as a 16 week old puppy!

Vincent , a beautiful black-and-white border collie mix, stays at our clinic for daycare while his mom goes to work. Every time he comes in, he greets us with enthusiasm and a big grin. Vincent is such a pleasure to have here---we love it when he's around!

Poor Little Bit has been through alot this year including several bladder stones and a terrible cold. Although he had to take several icky medicines and even undergo surgery, Little Bit was a trooper who always wagged his tail and gave his love to our staff members.

When pets board here at our clinic every one of our staff members visits the boarding areas and gives them love. Mika was chosen this month because she has a way of putting a smile on anyone’s face who pets her. She is always wagging her tail and is never shy about getting some love and attention.

True Stories of Rejuvenation---Thanks to Therapeutic Laser Treatments

“Why do I have to walk this way?” asked Nicholas, an 18 ½ year old orange tabby. Nancy, his human, said Nicholas would look up at her with “his face all pinched up”. She described his movements as being “crotchety". Nancy decided she would ask for pain medicine during Nicholas' next appointment with Dr. Craig Quirk, owner of Rose City Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Quirk, to Nancy's surprise, recommended therapeutic laser treatments. Nancy was very pleased to learn there was a viable option rather than having to watch Nicholas suffer.

Rose City Veterinary Hospital has been offering laser therapy since March of this year as a treatment option for a variety of ailments. Conditions that benefit from the therapeutic laser include injuries, chronic pain or arthritis, wounds and dermatological problems. Patients typically come in for 6 initial therapeutic laser treatments; the first three during the first week, two the second week and a final treatment in the third week. The benefit of each laser treatment is compounded with every subsequent treatment. Results are typically seen after the second or third treatment. Patients will then come in monthly for maintenance laser treatments.

“It's very important that the pets are brought in as scheduled,” says Certified Veterinary Technician, Jenn Fiendish. “Follow-through is essential.” For Nicholas, improvement was not noticed until after the 6th treatment. Nancy says Nicholas now walks up a flight of 16 stairs two to three times a day without limping or listing to one side a`s he had done previously. Nancy says she had no idea the treatments would be so effective. She'd thought that arthritis pain could not be managed without medication. She's amazed at his increased level of activity and the fluidity of his movement.

Although not typical, Baldwin, a ten year old Welsh Corgi, experienced improvement after the very first treatment. Greg Asher, Baldwin's human, says he's elated with seeing Baldwin bound up and down the stairs again. Greg says he is pleased to be able to have found “a non-invasive treatment for Baldwin rather than having to give him pills”.

Laser treatment can offer a great alternative to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which relieves any worry of long-term effects on a pet's liver and kidneys. It's the only course of treatment that actually stimulates the body to heal from within, without the use of prescription drugs. Non-thermal photons of light are administered to the body and absorbed by the injured cells. The cells are then stimulated and respond with a higher rate of metabolism. This results in increased circulation, an anti-inflammatory reaction, relief from pain and an acceleration of the healing process.

Both Greg and Nancy are now recommending therapeutic laser treatments to their friends and neighbors. Greg says he has two friends in particular who both have dogs with hip dysplasia. Nancy has let the owner of a dachshund with back pain know that Rose City Veterinary Hospital offers the treatments. She says “I don't want to call this a miracle, but Nicholas is certainly improved. In fact he's walking by right now asking for his brunch!”
